Belechu (Matrimonial) Program | September 2019

In September 2019, for the first time in recent memory, we partnered with our sister organization, Farooq in Harar to sponsor a joint wedding ceremony to help 15 young couples who were ready to get married, but did not have the funds to for a wedding ceremony or the means to purchase the items for a new household. With tireless effort from our board members, and especially from our founder Tasti Wazir, we were able to collect funds to make sure that the wedding ceremony was successful. The wedding was held in traditional Harari fashion with relatives invited, song and dance, and it was a truly happy moment for all of us that were involved. In fact it was such a success that immediately, we started planning for a 2nd bigger joint wedding event.
If we take a moment to reflect on the full meaning of what our members were able to do, it would require more space and time than this annual report. The claim of a homeland quickly becomes meaningless without the indigenous people there to represent it and the many centuries of culture and tradition that goes along with it. Harar is at a precarious point where, without help from us in the west, the risk that Harar is no longer inhabited by Harari’s can become real. We must do everything we can to slow this process and eventually reverse it. No one else will do it for us, and we have to start with first steps today. Our goal is to continue this program until we help, 1000 couples start a matrimonial life together. It is what is natural and what is highly recommended for us in Islam, and what will ensure the continuity of Harar with Hararis.
In August 2020, we were finally able to carry out our 2nd joint matrimonial!! Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, our sister organization FAROOQ and ASAS International successfully planned and executed a joint wedding for 50 Harari couples. What a blessing to be part of such a success story! Over 90 of you, our members, stepped up and said I will make a difference to the future stability of Harar, inhabited by Harari! Thank you so much!

Emergency Medical Treatment | September 2019

In 2019, we continued one of our essential services by organizing and raising funds for emergency medical treatment for two of our colleagues in Harar. As happens so many times, medical emergencies do not happen on schedule, and when they do happen, we have to respond rapidly and effectively.
When a member of Gs. Abdullahi Sherif was diagnosed with serious medical condition, you were there ready and willing to help from what Allah blessed you with. As a result we were able to send Gs Abdullahi a significant amount to help with taking care of his family member. If you remember in 2018, it was Gs Abdullahi who was viciously attacked by gangs of law-breakers while attending to his farm. It is our obligation to stand besides our people in Harar at all times to let them know we might be out of Harar but our thoughts seldom are far from worrying about the well-being of Harar.
Almost as soon as we closed our fund-raising activities for Gs Sherif, we received another appeal for emergency medical assistance. This time it was for a giant patriot, Gs Abdusamad Idriss. Due to chronic conditions with his health, he required immediate overseas medical attention, and again, with your help we set up a Go-Fund me account and also started a fund-raising campaign. We were joined in this effort by many other Harari organizations. Alhamdullilah, our brother received the medical attention he needed, and we are ready to help again if necessary.
Besides these two mentioned drives, we also participated in and assisted with spreading the word for other individuals needing emergency medical assistance. This is a topic of great concern for all Hararis world-wide, as we know certain ailments seem to occur with high frequency in our population in Harar.
We HAVE MUCH TO DO. We plan to establish a clinic in Harar, run by young Harari medical professionals, and you will be hearing more about this program as we develop it and have information to share.
Stay-tuned!!

Ramadan Program 2020 | September 2020

The Ramadan program for 2020 was a tremendous success. With the dedicated support of FAROOQ Harari Philanthropic Organization, we collected and distributed the following:
1. Dry Food Recipients – Due to COVID, we were not able to provide door-to-door service for IFTAAR as we did last year. Instead, we partnered with FAROOQ and donated 200,000 birr to be used to purchase dry-goods, including cooking oil (5-liters), flour (10 kg), dates (box), sugar (5-kg), rice (4-kilo). This was distributed to every gate in Harar.
2. 5 + 1 Program . This was an innovative program during Ramadan where one able person prepared daily cooked meals for 5 other elderly neighbors for a small fee. This was hugely successful, and we will be definitely repeating for next year.
3. Argobba Girgara – Through dedicated individuals from the Organization, we identified 50 individuals, mostly single moms from the surrounding Argobba communities to give them a cash assistance of 500.00 birr. This went a long way to ease their burdens.
4. Qallu Girgara – We also identified 20 Qallu families that were displaced by ethnic tensions. They too, similarly were given a small cash donation for Ramadan based on need.
5. Zakaat-ul Fixr – We set up a GO_FUND me page to collect Zakaat-ul Fixr for those wishing to donate their Zakaat obligations in Harar. This was distributed to the needy by Farooq members.
6. Eid Iraaz – Along with Amaana Kids, we sponsored Eid-Iraaz, a special Harari custom, for over 20 young orphans.
